Character Construction In Chaucer's Troilus And Criseyde Character Construction in Chaucers Troilus and Criseyde Chaucers epic poem, Troilus and Criseyde, is not a new tale, but one Chaucer merely expanded upon. One of these expansions that Chaucers work has become renowned for is the improvement of the characters. Generally, Chaucers characters have more texture, depth, humanity, and subtlety than those of the previous tales. Of the three main figures in the epic poem, Troilus, Criseyde, and Pandarus, Pandarus is the character that Chaucer took the most liberty with, creating and evolving Pandarus until he had taken on an entirely different role. However, this is not to say that Chaucer did not add his own style to Troilus and Criseyde. Chaucers continual development of the primary characters definitely lend more interest and humor to the epic poem, Troilus and Criseyde. The most interesting character by far is Pandarus. He serves as the protagonist and go between for Troilus and Criseyde. In fact, one could argue if it were not for him, Troilus may never have attained the brief affections of his lady love, Criseyde. When Pandarus comes across an uneasy Troilus and inquires as to the cause of his trouble, his speech is very eloquent. It is this speech that gives the reader his first glimpse of how subtlety and indirectness will initially characterize Pandarus. Further along the passage, Pandarus torments Troilus into anger, causing him to reveal the source of his woe. (Chaucer 24-5). In regard to the introduction of Pandarus, Kirby concludes: Chaucer makes us feel that here is a witty, likable chap who does not take life too seriously and who does not hesitate to mingle friendly works with good-natured taunts. (127) Pandarus also reveals that he is fairly well educated with his allusion to Niobe. In addition to the revelation of his education, this also reveals Pandarus penchant for a pattern of persuasion which he employs throughout his role. Pandarus thinks the that way to make a man do something that he does not want to do is not to tell him bluntly and baldly what course of action he should pursue, but rather, gradually to lead up to the main point, expanding on the notion in various ways and especially by quoting sufficient authority and testimony to show his plan is the correct one, in fact, the only one possible (Kirby 133). This demonstrates that not only does Pandarus have a classical education, but that he also maintains some grasp on the concept of psychology. Aside from the intellectual side of Pandarus, Chaucer develops a very human aspect to this character. Chaucer purposefully places Pandarus in the role of the unrequited lover, making him seem less feeble-minded. At the same time however, Pandarus reasserts his illogical reasoning in order to convince Troilus to divulge his heart wrenching secret. Even after Troilus curt dismissal, Pandarus continues to badger the beleaguered knight, demonstrating yet another strong personality characteristic: tenacity. This is supported by Pandarus physically shaking Troilus. And with that word he gan hym for to shake,/And seyde, Thef/ thow shalt hyre name telle,/But tho gan sely Troilus for to quake/As though men sholde han led hym into helle,(Chaucer 36). Consequentially frightened, Troilus tells Pandarus of his love for Criseyde, Pandarus niece and even goes so far as to agree to enlist Pandarus help in bringing his nieces heart to the beleaguered knight. In his dealings with his niece, issues of Pandarus morality comes into being, especially as his roll of the go-between for Troilus and Criseyde. The word pander, where he has bequeathed the English language, illuminates the negative connotations that are put on his actions in modern meaning (Berkley Research 3). In regard to Pandarus selling of Criseydes honor, one scholar believes that his loose morals would be fitting for someone of younger years, but on an older man, it would be a serious affront to his morality (Rosetti 177). A slightly more favorable view holds that as Pandarus is beholden to aide a friend, Chaucer uses the characters charm to influence readers to view the act as less of crime. Customer Q needs to always remember that their customer’s perception of them is everything. You always want to make your customer’s shopping experience is as positive as possible, because if you do, in the end you will receive loyalty of that customer. Company Q does have time to turn their social responsibility around. If they start looking at all the ways to improve how their customer’s view of them, it will increase their profits and make any shareholders they do have extremely pleased. Company Q closed two of their stores that were located in the higher crime rate areas due to the stores consistently losing money. This could be due to several things. It appears that Company Q thought they were being socially responsible by doing this, but they were doing the total opposite. First, Company Q could have changed their shopping hours if the closing of the stores were actually due to crime activity. Opening the stores early and closing at a reasonable time could avoid any crime activity that usually happens more often when it gets darker out. Next, the company could add more security cameras to the store for additional protection of their employees and inventory. Placing security cameras throughout the building could help with both internal and external theft. People are less likely to steal money or products if they know they are being watched by the man. Finally, Company Q also could provide training for new and current employees. By conducting ethics training it cou ld help the employees understand the policies of the company and help guide them to make the best decisions for them as an employee and the company they’re working for. By just adding a few cameras, changing a couple policies and adding employee training, Company Q could be increasing their sales again instead of losing profits and closing stores that could have stayed open. Many customers have requested over the years that Company Q start offering health-conscience and organic products. It took them years for them to consider this request. Nowadays, it seems like organic or health-conscience food is the â€Å"in† thing. It’s like everyone wants to be healthy. What grocery store doesn’t have a section of organic products? Dining Feature

It was an intelligent idea to go against conformity, and Open this kind Of restaurant – not a Korean dining place. Singling is a slang term for Singapore and Western (English). Its menu holds Asian cuisines that are not commonly around the metro and Western delicacies which the Filipinos are quite used to. The restaurant had a unique attack on food; it is the first to introduce Singapore dishes in the streets of Marking, and mind you, its menu is usually the mall-worthy and overpriced type of menu, but hey, they offer food at a very reasonable price.Walking along Lilac street, a residential and dining road in Barraging Conception Dos in Marking, it is quite noticeable that Singling Cafe is a newly opened cafe because for those who know the place, the stall they are now occupying has long been vacant, and with long, I meant really really long. Another is when you look from the outside, their accent of red and black details over light brown wooden furniture looks unique compared to the other 3 restaurants beside it. Entering the empty restaurant on a Sunday afternoon, what greeted me was an edgy and laid back interior design.All pieces of furniture are wooden, a few chairs and the frame of a huge mirror are wooden but are colored red. Their menu is along the counter and also on top of all tables. They also have a chalkboard menu that holds the drinks they have. I took a seat on the left side of the diner just across their gigantic mirror with red wooden frame. At my back is a wooden wall with white small frames with photos of food that they offer. The menu on the table is only printed in bond paper, but a clipboard holds it and makes it a little more presentable.I decided to order 4 dishes, ND below are my reviews on the four: MME Green (PH 168. 00) – The first dish that arrived is the MME Green, a Singapore dish. The dish looks kind of orange with noticeable bite-sized chicken, and it had a green accent because of the cabbages which are crunchy â⠂¬â€œ fresh, indeed! It came out with a strong seafood and spicy smell, but when once tasted it, it turned out not too spicy and not too neutral. It is spiced just right. You can easily water down the spiciness. No wonder that the noodles are quite firm because they are fried yellow noodles.I was just mind of confused looking for shrimps and seafood pieces, but there were not any. I, then, wondered where the strong seafood smell might come from. The dish was so oriental because of the spices incorporated in it. Juicy Lucy Burger (PH 198. 00) – This dish is the shish in Singling. This burger is their best-selling Western dish. The burger bun was presented in a unique way. It was like joint panels formed like a flower. Outside the burger were cabbage strips, a tomato slice and a cucumber slice topped with Thousand Islands dressing.These vegetables were also in the burger, but the tomato ND the cucumber were doubled, and instead of cabbage strips, the burger had a whole crunchy cabbage leaf. The vegetables and the % pound beef patty are drizzled with mustard. The patty looks ordinary, but once you begin eating it, little by little you can notice the melted cheese inside it. It is not a usual patty, I swear, it was spicy and cheesy at the same time. The cheese compliments the spiciness of the patty (with spiciness I meant full of spices). Braised Pork Belly with Steamed Rice (PH 188. 0) – The Braised pork belly and the Rice were served separately. The dish looked plainly presented with pork Cuts, brown sauce and spring onions that added a green accent to it. Its sauce is brownish and smooth. It is quite salty and resembles the taste of Showing's Sad Sauce. The pork was still quite tough making it hard to chew. The rice goes well with the dish because it helps lessen the saltiness of the sauce. However, it is disgusting that I have already swallowed the rice yet the pork stayed in my mouth because it was difficult to chew. Cereal Shrimp (PH 298. 0) -? Looking through the menu, this dish struck me cause I have not yet tried Shrimps with Cereals. The dish was served with 3 Fried shrimps and a significant amount of oats as topping. With the oats almost overwhelming the shrimps, the dish was significantly color light brown with orange and green touches because of the shrimps and the curry leaves respectively. Began peeling the shrimps and noticed that it looks well-cooked even from the outside, and I just verified it when I tasted it. It tasted like plain shrimp until I tried it with the oats. It tasted buttery, and the oats were crunchy.

What many people fail to understand about their foods is that the world of food is made up of carbohydrates. People try and go â€Å"carb-free† but they misunderstand what this means. There is a difference between simple carbs and complex carbs. By their very nature, simple carbs are simple for your body to digest which is why they can be immediately converted into useful energy which must be burned off. But complex carbs take longer for your body to process, giving you energy over a longer period of time. Foods made of simple carbs are considered the most addictive foods out there because they are easily broken down by the body. When this happens, the food is converted into energy, with the help of the liver which gives your body the useful nutrients, and converts those nutrients into glucose, or blood sugar. This increases the amount of blood sugar in the body immediately. But if this is not burned off, put to use for some form of physical activity, then the body is overwhelmed by how much glucose is there, and the pancreas steps in to convert it into fat immediately and store that fat. When the body continually stores excess sugar/simple carbohydrates, it regularly increases the blood sugar of your body, which releases extra insulin within the body to counter that, and it increases the amount of fat being stored. When this finishes, the immediate rush of insulin, high blood sugar, and energy is all depleted and you are left feeling fatigued not but 30 minutes after eating those foods. This causes the body to become addicted to those foods, because it relies upon them for the energy necessary to get through the day. These simple carbohydrates are found in all fake, processed foods. If it did not naturally exist in the form you are consuming, it is likely a processed carbohydrate and very bad for you. Many processed foods today not only contain a great deal of simple carbohydrates and often a great deal of processed sugars, but they also contain the chemical aspartame which permanently kills off brain cells and leads to serious symptoms within the body. When consuming sugar and aspartame together, it causes near lethal consequences over the long term, and yet it also causes serious addiction. Aspartame is addictive due to the way in which is affects dopamine absorption in the brain. It interferes with the otherwise normal uptake of the neurotransmitter known as dopamine, causing huge hits that the body then regularly craves. When the body cannot get the neurotransmitter it wants, it will crave that same item which provided the hit as before. In other words, if drinking a diet soda resulted in a huge hit of dopamine, and after that your brain’s ability to process dopamine were more limited in other ways, it would send signals that you needed to consume more of the soda which originally brought the â€Å"hit† that the brain is craving so much. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener found in also all â€Å"diet† or â€Å"sugar free† drinks and foods. It increases the risk of cancers, it leads to mental disorders as a result of regular damage to the body and the brain. Aspartame damages the nerve cells in the brain to death, something which causes regular degeneration of brain cells until the point that each of the cells dies. This cannot be reversed which is why it is such a serious concern. Aspartame, found, again, in many foods and drinks as an artificial sweetener, causes headaches, weight gain, and high blood sugar in between all that. Complex carbohydrates are converted into energy over a longer period of time because they take more time to be broken down in your metabolic system. This leaves you with a longer amount of energy, no spike in your blood sugar, and no excess sugar converted immediately into extra fat reserves. Complex carbohydrates are found in whole wheats, fruits and vegetables, and almost everything that is natural in between. In the process of converting food into useful energy, known as the metabolic process, if there is not enough adequate nutrients and minerals being processed by the body, then it will send signals that it needs to consume more. It will tell the rest of the body that it is still hungry, because it is actually craving specific vitamins and minerals which were not gained in the last round of eating or drinking. His father was James Nathaniel and his mother was Carrie Mercer Langston Hughes. His grandfather was Charles Langston, an Ohio abolitionist. As a young boy he lived in Buffalo, New York, Cleveland, Ohio, Lawrence, Kansas, Mexico City, Topeka, Kansas, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Kansas City, Kansas. In 1914 his parents divorced and he, his mother, and his stepfather moved to Lincoln, Illinois. In high school back in Cleveland, he was elected class poet, and editor of the senior class yearbook. He taught English to some families in Mexico in 1921 and also published his first prose piece, "Mexican Games"(Davis). In an excerpt from an article about Langston Hughes in Encarta 97, it says that he was discovered in 1925, while he was working as a busboy in a restaurant in Washington, D.C., when he accidentally left three of his poems next to the plate of Vachel Lindsay, an American poet. She helped him ge! t publicity for his works and she got him seriously started in writing(Encarta). In an article about Langston Hughes in The Reference Library of Black America it talks about all the places in the world that Hughes has traveled. He probably used much of the information of the cultures of other countries to write. Hughes traveled all over the world as a seaman. He went to the Soviet Union, Haiti, Japan, Spain, Genoa, France, and other parts of Europe. Hughes was an author, anthologist, librettist, songwriter, columnist, translator, founder of theaters, and a poetical innovator in jazz technology. Hughes liked to write in many genres such as prose, comedy, drama, fiction, biographies, autobiographies, and TV and radio scripts. Langston Hughes was the father of the Harlem Renaissance and made many contributions on the behalf of African- Americans which led to the end of discrimination and segregation(Davis). Hughes was an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance because he was one of the most talented and famous black writers in his time. The Harlem Renaissance was the black movement during the 1920's. Many African-Americans got famous during this time and more people in the United States and the world got to see another side of African- Americans which had never been seen before. People saw that blacks could do things the same or better than white people and many, but certainly not all, barriers like segregation were decreased noticeably. He wrote numerous protest poems in which he used irony to get his points across to the reader. Hughes was influenced by Jean Toomer, another black writer and poet. It seemed as though Hughes used his poetry as a way to combat against the ongoing struggle that African- Americans still face today. Many believe that his best poems were inspired by the city of Harlem. He was even called the "Poet-Laureate of Harlem" because of his unders! tanding for the city. Hughes best volume of Harlem works is Montage of a Dream Deferred. Hughes was the author who during the Harlem Renaissance used much of the Black culture in his work. He began to use the Blues, Ballad form, dance rhythms, folk speech, and Jazz in his poetry. Hughes had success in many different fields of writing. His best drama, "Mulatto," a play, was performed on Broadway 373 times in 1935. In his best comedy, "Little Ham"(1935), again he uses themes from Harlem. Hughes's best fiction is in his "Simple" series. In his lifetime, Langston Hughes won several awards. In 1925 he won his first prize for poetry in the Opportunity contest and third prize for essay in the Crisis contest. In 1926 he published his first volume of poems, The Weary Blues. In 1953 he won the Anisfeld-Wolfe Award. Hughes also won the Witter Bynner Prize for undergraduate poetry while attending Lincoln University. Even West Indian poets, such as Leopold Senghor, saw Hughes as the father of the Negritude Movement(Davis). The Human Stain, the Film by Robert Benton - Movie Review Example   The film introduces Nathan Zuckerman, who leads a lonely life in New England due to his divorce and illness. Then Coleman Silk (protagonist), who is a professor expelled from his profession, is introduced by the director. He was expelled from his profession due to racist remarks. This incident affected his family life and he lost his wife. So he decided to write a book with the help of Nathan Zuckerman. When Coleman met Faunia Farley (divorced woman), his decision to write a book on the problems faced by him becomes unimportant. The individuals who are behind Coleman’s problem began to interfere into their relationship. When Lester (say, Faunia's ex-husband) enters, the plot thickens because he unveils Faunia's past. Lester reveals Faunia’s role in the accident which killed their children. Later, the viewers come to know that Coleman’s ancestry is rooted African American community and he was pretending as a Jew. Discussion: The discussion is divided into five sections, namely: human life, racism, identity crisis (Hopkins’s identity), complexity of characters and individual freedom of the director. A. Human life: In the film, the director tries his level best to unveil the secrets of human life and its complexity. For instance, the main characters in the film (Nathan, Coleman, Faunia and Lester) possess dual lives. Their real lives are hidden in their past and they are not ready to unveil the same in front of the viewers. For instance, Nathan does not like to reveal the secrets of his life and decides to keep aloof from the mainstream society. On the other side, Coleman decides to escape from the mainstream society and to hide his identity as an African American. Faunia does not like to reveal her past and her life with her husband. Within this context, Lester uncovers Faunia’s identity and the reason behind the psychological problems faced by him in his personal domain. So, one can easily identify that the main theme of th e film is human life and the secret behind the same. B. Racism: Racism is not the main theme of the film but it is inherent within the same. For instance, Coleman makes use of his fake identity to escape from racism. He very well knew that his real identity as an African American may create problems in his profession. So, he decided to pretend himself as a Jew. But this did not help him much because he became a victim of his own comments on racism. Foster opines that â€Å"Similarly, the passing story of The Human Stain (Robert Benton, 2003) would hold no interest without the inevitable â€Å"reveal†Ã¢â‚¬  (114). From a different angle of view, Coleman’s pretension as a Jew is to veil his real identity as an African American. At the same time, his mask (as a white Jew) did not help him to claim himself as the member of mainstream society. So, Coleman’s attempt can be considered as a futile attempt to escape from racism. C. Identity crisis (Hopkins’s ide ntity) The main characters, including the protagonist, face the problem of identity crisis and related problems in their personal lives.
